Gas Stove Burner Won't Light: Troubleshooting Guide

You turn the knob, hear the click-click-click of the igniter, and... nothing. No flame, maybe a faint smell of gas, maybe not even that. Before you call anyone, there are a handful of things worth checking yourself — most burner-won't-light problems come down to one of a small number of usual suspects, and several of them take less than five minutes to fix.


Step 1: Listen for the Clicking Sound


Turn the knob to "light" or "ignite" and listen carefully. You should hear a rapid clicking — that's the igniter sparking, trying to catch the gas.

If you hear clicking but no flame, the igniter is working, which narrows things down considerably — the problem is likely with gas flow or a dirty burner, not the electrical ignition system. Skip to Step 2.

If you hear no clicking at all, the igniter itself may be the problem. Continue to the igniter section below.


Step 2: Check the Burner Cap and Ports


This is the single most common fix, and it's entirely doable yourself. Gas burners ignite through small ports (tiny holes) around the burner head, and it doesn't take much — a boil-over, a bit of food debris, or just general grime — to clog them enough that gas can't escape properly to catch a spark.

  1. Make sure the stove is off and cool
  2. Remove the burner cap (it usually just lifts off)
  3. Look closely at the small holes around the burner head — food residue, rust, or moisture can block them
  4. Clean the ports gently with a toothpick, small wire brush, or a needle — avoid using anything that could widen or damage the holes
  5. Wipe the area dry, since moisture in the ports can also prevent ignition
  6. Reseat the cap carefully, making sure it's sitting flat and aligned correctly — a cap that's even slightly misaligned won't ignite properly

This alone resolves a large share of "won't light" complaints.


Step 3: Make Sure the Burner Cap Is Seated Correctly


Even a clean cap that isn't sitting exactly right can prevent ignition. After cleaning, double check that it's level and fully seated in its base — not tilted, not off-center. It sounds minor, but a cap sitting a few millimeters off can be the entire problem.


Step 4: Check for a Gas Supply Issue


If other burners on the stove work fine, this rules out a whole-house gas supply problem, but it's still worth confirming:

  • Is the gas valve behind the stove fully open?
  • If you have a gas leak detector, or smell gas faintly, this changes things — see the safety note below
  • If this happened right after a gas line was serviced or the stove was moved, the shut-off valve may not have been reopened fully


Step 5: Rule Out a Faulty Igniter


If you hear no clicking sound at all when you turn the knob, the igniter switch or module itself may have failed. A few things to check:

  • Is the area around the igniter (usually a small silver or ceramic component near the burner) clean and dry? Moisture or grease buildup here can prevent it from sparking
  • Does the igniter clicking happen on other burners but not this one? If so, that specific igniter or its wiring is the likely culprit
  • Do ALL burners fail to click? This points toward a more central issue — the igniter module, the control board, or the outlet, rather than one specific burner

A single failed igniter switch is a fairly common and inexpensive part to replace, but it typically requires opening up the stovetop, which is where calling a technician makes sense unless you're comfortable working with the internal components.


A Quick Safety Note on Gas Smell


If you smell gas — not just briefly when the burner catches, but a lingering or strong odor — turn off the burner, don't attempt further troubleshooting, ventilate the room, and if the smell is strong or doesn't dissipate, leave the house and call your gas utility company or 911 from outside. This is one situation where "fix it yourself" isn't the right instinct; a genuine gas leak is a safety issue, not an appliance repair one.


When One Burner Works but Another Doesn't


This pattern is actually helpful diagnostically — it usually rules out the gas supply entirely (since gas is clearly reaching the stove) and points toward something localized: a clogged port on that specific burner, a misaligned cap, or an individual igniter switch that's failed. Compare the problem burner to a working one side by side; differences in how the caps sit or how clean the ports look often reveal the issue immediately.


When to Call a Technician


  • You've cleaned the ports, reseated the cap, and confirmed gas supply, but it still won't light
  • No burners click at all, suggesting an electrical or control board issue
  • You smell gas persistently, even after turning everything off
  • The stove is under warranty — attempting repairs yourself could affect coverage, so it's worth checking your warranty terms before opening anything up

A stove that won't light on one burner is often a five-minute fix. A stove where nothing sparks at all, or where gas smell is involved, is where it's worth bringing in someone who works on these every day.
